All vote totals cited below are unofficial tallies.
The Obama-Biden ticket won Wyandotte County with just over 67%.
In the Third Congressional District, the libertarian candidate received 47.21% of the Wyandotte County vote. There was no Democratic candidate.
Nationally, Obama won the national popular vote count with 62, 149,499 (50.55%).
Romney got 58,789,815 votes (47.82%). Gary Johnson, libertarian party candidate, received just short of 1%; the green party candidate got a third of one percent.
Democrats won the national party popular vote count in congressional elections, 48.8 % to 48.47 %. According to the Washington Post, "Despite losing the popular vote, Republicans are set to have their second-biggest House majority in 60 years and their third-biggest since the Great Depression."

Congratulations to the Democratic winners in our contested legislative races:
State Senate contests-
Pat Pettey beat republican Chris Steineger 63% to 37% in the Wyandotte County part of the 6th District. She won 59% of the 1038 votes cast in the Johnson County portion of the district.
David Haley won over Joe Ward in the Fourth District, 79% to 20%

State House of Representative races-
31st District- Louis Ruiz won his district with 71.5% of the vote
33rd District- Tom Burroughs won with 58% of the vote
36th District- Kathy Wolfe Moore won with 65% of the vote against her republican and libertarian opponents

The State Senate Fifth District will miss the fine representation of Kelly Kultala. Kelly won the Wyandotte County part of her district with 54%. However, 62% of the district voters are located in Leavenworth County, where far right winger Steve Fitzgerald received 1665 more votes than Kelly.
The Wyandotte County part of the district has a registration breakdown of 39% Democratic, 33% Unaffiliated and 29% republican. Registration in the Leavenworth County portion is 36% republican, 33% Unaffiliated and 30% Democratic.

A few statistics from last Sunday's public affairs/news shows (Fox, NBC and ABC):

Obama won nationally with 55% of women, 71% of Hispanics and 60% of young people.
The Hispanic vote for republicans has declined from 44% in 2004, 31% in 2008, to 27% in 2012.
The Asian-American republican vote declined from 42% in 2004, to 33% in 2008, to 26% in 2012.
Non-white voters have risen nationally from 23% in 2004 to 27% in 2008 to 28% in 2012.

A few battleground state statistics-
Non-white voter turnout in Ohio rose from 17% in 2008 to 21% in 2012; in Colorado, the Hispanic vote rose one percent this year over 2008
In Florida, non-white turnout was 29% in 2008 and 34% in 2012. Obama won the Cuban-American vote there, which is a first for a Democratic presidential candidate

Congratulations to Jason Kander, the newly elected Missouri Secretary of State. Jason, a Bishop Miege graduate, spoke to the Breakfast back in 2007 about his experience as the lead intelligence officer in Afghanistan.

In-office voting at the Wyandotte County Election Commissioner's office, 850 State Avenue, begins at 8 am next Tuesday, October 23rd. You may vote 8 am to 5 pm through Friday, November 2nd; 8 am to Noon on Monday, November 5th. You must have a photo ID in order for your vote to count.

Editorial Comment: Despite a super majority of republicans in our Kansas state legislature, our state was the only one that could not get congressional and legislative reapportionment accomplished through the normal process. The tea party and the moderate republicans just could not get along. It made me think of this quote from P.J. O'Rourke:
"The Republicans are the party that says government doesn't work and then they get elected and prove it."

Presidential politics has always been a rich man's game. But now, thanks to the Supreme Court ruling in Citizens United that upended decades of limits on campaign donations, financing a presidential race is the exclusive domain of the kind of megadonor whose portfolios make Mitt Romney look middle-class. "I have lots of money, and can give it legally now," Texas billionaire and top GOP moneyman Harold Simmons recently bragged to The Wall Street Journal. "Just never to Democrats."

In past elections, big donors like Simmons gave millions for advocacy groups like Swift Boat Veterans for Truth. By law, such groups were only allowed to run issue ads – but instead they directly targeted John Kerry, drawing big fines from the Federal Elections Commission. Now, with the blessing of the Supreme Court, the wealthy can legally hand out unlimited sums to groups that openly campaign for a candidate, knowing that their "dark money" donations will be kept entirely secret. The billionaire Koch brothers, for instance, have reportedly pledged $60 million to defeat President Obama this year – but their off-the-book contributions don't appear in any FEC filings.
